WHAT DOCUMENT
EXAMINERS DO:
Questions
about documents are answered through the scientific
application of knowledge, skill, experience, training, and education
specific to document examination as well as from a number of other
fields, such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, language studies,
etc.
Examiners
in this field are sometimes known by the term "handwriting
experts". Forensic document examination includes (but is not
limited to) the expertise of handwriting identification - including
cursive or script style writing, hand printing, signatures,
numerals, and other written marks or signs. Forensic document
examination does not involve the study of personality or
character.
The
field of forensic document examination also includes the
manufacturing processes and materials that go into the production of
documents, as well as the methods, machines, instruments, and human
agencies by which the parts of documents are formed or brought
together.
An
examiner must also recognize, properly preserve, and collect other
relevant physical evidence that may be present on documents (such as
latent fingerprints, saliva stains, trace evidence, etc.), and
employ the proper laboratory treatment of any document or printed
data which might help reveal information about how or by whom
evidence was generated.
The
examination of documents involves a variety of scientific
procedures and forensic applications. Documents are subjected
to visual, microscopic, and photographic analysis. Physical
qualities of the documents - ink, watermarks, paper, deletions,
erasures, indentures, obliterations, handwriting, hand printing,
typewriting, photocopying, impressions, etc. - reveal answers to
questions concerning the documents' originality, authorship, and
unauthorized handling. Findings are significant in resolving
"white collar" criminal activities in the legal, governmental,
insurance, banking, corporate, and medical communities.
In
my laboratory examination of documents, I make scientific
examinations, comparisons, and analyses of documents in order to:
(1) establish genuineness or non-genuineness, or to reveal
alterations, additions, or deletions; (2) identify or eliminate
persons as the source of handwriting; (3) identify or eliminate the
source of typewriting or other impressions, marks, or relevant
evidence of any kind; and (4) write reports or give testimony, when
needed, to aid the users of the my services in an understanding of my
findings.
As
a Forensic Document Examiner, I am intimately linked to
the legal system as a forensic scientist. The term "forensic"
represents the word "legal", - thus forensics is the body of
science that is concerned with searching
for the truth within the legal system. As such, I deal
with items that form part of a case that may or may not come
before a court of law.

"Anything that conveys a
message can be considered a document. Questioned documents are
documents that have come into dispute; whose veracity, authenticity,
or origin are in question.
Documents can bear evidence that proves, beyond doubt, the issue at
hand."
WHAT IS A
DOCUMENT ?
A
document, in its broadest sense, means "any material which
contains marks, symbols, or signs either visible, partially visible
or invisible, that may convey a message or meaning to someone."
The scope of a forensic document examination is not limited to the
conventional piece of paper bearing a handwritten signature or note,
but may also include commercially printed documents, typewritten
documents, or even markings on bodies, lumber or gravestones.
